F.A.Q.

Find answers to common questions about joining, flying, and being part of our community.

General Questions

Virtual Star Alliance is a US-based virtual airline for flight sim enthusiasts. We offer realistic routes, automated PIREPs, rank progression, and a friendly community. We fly everywhere from the US—North America, Europe, and beyond. Membership is free and volunteer-run.
Yes. Virtual Star Alliance is 100% free—no fees, no subscriptions. We're a hobby community run by volunteers.
We support Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS 2020/2024), X-Plane 11/12, and Prepar3D. Our ACARS works with all of them—use whichever you prefer.
We're US-based with routes across North America, Europe, and worldwide. Check our schedule on the Crew Center for current destinations.

Joining

You need: a supported flight sim (MSFS, X-Plane, or P3D), a Discord account, and you must be at least 16. A VATSIM or IVAO account is optional but recommended for ATC.
No. It's optional. Having one is recommended for realistic ATC and events, but you can fly offline and still log flights with us.
Go to our registration page, fill in your details (name, email, Discord, optional VATSIM/IVAO CID). Applications are usually reviewed within 24–48 hours.
Yes. When you fly under Virtual Star Alliance, we ask that you follow our procedures and represent the VA professionally.

Flying

At least one flight every 30 days to stay active. You can request a Leave of Absence (LOA) in the Crew Center if you're away. Inactive accounts without an LOA may be suspended after 60 days.
We have scheduled routes in the Crew Center; we encourage those but also allow custom flights using fleet aircraft and our hubs/destinations.
ACARS is our flight-tracking tool that records your flight and submits PIREPs. Yes, you need to use our ACARS for flights to count. It runs in the background and is required for accurate stats.

Technical

Use the password reset link on the Crew Center and enter your email. Check spam if you don't get the email, or ask for help on Discord.
Crew Center Downloads section has liveries for our fleet (MSFS, X-Plane, P3D). Third-party sites like Flightsim.to are fine if the livery matches Virtual Star Alliance.
Have the sim running and be in an aircraft; set the correct sim in ACARS. If it still fails: allow ACARS through firewall/antivirus, try running as Administrator, reinstall ACARS and SimConnect if needed, then contact support on Discord with a screenshot.

Community & Events

After you're approved, you'll get a Discord invite by email and in the Crew Center. Join here: discord.gg/JfeEFdWPaM. We use Discord for announcements, support, and community.
Yes. We run group flights and events; they're posted on Discord and the Crew Center. You can join VATSIM/IVAO ops with ATC or casual fly-ins. Joining is optional but a great way to meet the community.
Ranks are based on flight hours and experience. You progress from Cadet through Second Officer, First Officer, Senior First Officer, Captain, Senior Captain, and Instructor/Examiner. Each rank opens access to more aircraft. Promotions are applied automatically from your logged hours in the Crew Center. See the Ranks page for the full structure.
